In NZ, they're known as Kahawai, but across the ditch, Aussies call them Salmon. Not unlike the humble beginnings of the pavlova, I don't think this debate will be settled anytime soon.
At the end of the day, whatever you call them, the 'Arripis Trutta' is one of the most targeted fish in the southern hemisphere and a favorite among many anglers. Absolutely loving the enamel Doon River pins that they are making.
So glad they've added the kahawai to fit amongst the other kiwi fish species.

Super excited to receive my pin! I saw this and originally got it to commemorate a trip with my father, where I caught my first salmon on fly. I then decided that I’ll buy a pin for every fish I catch on fly! I can’t wait to add more to my collection!
I bought some for my fish obsessed grandson and he loves them. I just purchased a couple more as a surprise.
This species of fish known as Kahawai are abundant in our inshore and off fishing areas, they very much an underrated fish in our waters. Processed quickly and correctly they are a very nice table fish. Smoked Kahawai fish pie is very very nice meal…
Yes this Kahawai fish pin does have a story attached to it. About four years ago now, my fishing Buddy and I were in one of our local fishing competitions. He caught a huge Kahawai, at first I thought it was a rat Kingfish, this Kahawai weighed in just over 4 kgs Winning first prize for this species, winning a personal locator beacon which is install in the boat.
